How We had a Stress Free Family Reunion Session at the Oasis in Orange Beach

Managing a family reunion photo session with 27 people takes planning, strategy, and clear communication. For this recent session at The Oasis in Orange Beach, our preparations started months in advance to ensure the entire evening went smoothly for everyone involved.

During initial planning, the client and I discussed whether to stay on-site or travel to a more natural, secluded beach setting. Resort properties like The Oasis come with classic trade-offs: beaches are busier and backgrounds can be limited, but staying on-site eliminates travel logistics for a large group. More importantly, large resort buildings cast a massive shadow over the beach in the late afternoon. This built-in shade allows us to start earlier in the day without forcing anyone to squint into harsh sunlight.
We mapped out a solid game plan for bright sun, along with contingency plans for potential weather. Fortunately, we were blessed with a gorgeous evening.

Executing the Game Plan
We kicked off the session in the shaded area cast by the resort structure. I set up portable studio lighting to add depth, warm tones, and crisp color to each smaller family group portrait. Because the family was so organized, we breezed through the individual breakdown shots ahead of schedule—leaving plenty of extra time for fun, relaxed combinations before the main group setup.

Once we captured the full-group portrait in the comfortable shade of The Oasis, we made the quick move down to the water’s edge. There, we captured a second large group portrait with the Gulf of Mexico rolling in behind them, followed by another quick round of family groupings and candid moments as the evening light softened.

By structuring the workflow to move from open shade to the shoreline, 27 family members received a seamless, fun experience with zero stress and beautiful, balanced portraits.
