Why We Don't Offer Beach Mini-Sessions (And How It Saved This Perdido Key Shoot)
The Sunset That Almost Wasn't: Beating the Storm in Perdido Key
When you book a beach portrait session during a Gulf Coast summer, you quickly learn that Mother Nature likes to keep things unpredictable. On the afternoon of this Perdido Key session, watching the radar was like watching a suspense movie. A massive storm cell was pushing directly toward the coastline, threatening to pour heavy rain right during our scheduled shoot time.
With a traditional, back-to-back mini-session setup, a weather radar like this usually means panic and an instant cancellation email. But because this family reserved a full, dedicated evening session with us, we had the flexibility to pivot. We tracked the radar in real time, adjusted our start time to head down to the sand earlier than expected, and set up to beat the rain.
As the dark, moody cloud wall rolled over the water, most natural-light photographers would have packed up their gear and run. Without the sun, available-light photos end up looking dark, flat, and grainy.
However, because we bring professional off-camera lighting directly onto the beach, those dark storm clouds didn't ruin our photos—they became an epic, high-contrast backdrop. By placing our custom-modified Godox strobes off to the side, we were able to carve the family out against the moody sky, keeping their skin tones warm, crisp, and natural while capturing the dramatic atmosphere of the storm building behind them.
After the Storm: Natural Light, Rainbows, and Room to Breathe
Once the rain passed over Perdido Key, the beach completely transformed. The temperature cooled down, the air cleared, and the sky opened up with that magical, soft glow that only happens right after a summer shower.
Because we weren't watching a 15-minute timer, there was no rush to pack up or panic. We stepped right back down to the water’s edge. The wet sand created a perfect, glass-like reflection of the family against the sea, and the soft, diffused ambient light gave us a totally different, organic look to round out their gallery.
And then came the real reward for waiting out the weather: a faint rainbow stretched across the darkening sky over the Gulf. Watching the toddlers splash in the cool surf with their grandparents while the storm retreated wasn't something we could have ever planned on a calendar—it happened simply because we had the time and flexibility to let the evening unfold naturally.
Moments like these—a baby’s curious smile, unscripted giggles by the waves, and a stress-free family enjoying the beach—are exactly why I don't offer mini-sessions. When you give a session room to breathe, a rainy radar forecast isn't a ruined vacation memory; it's just the prelude to a stunning evening on the coast.
“We had a great experience with Jon! He was the perfect balance of incredibly professional and personal. He handled our 4-generation family with kindness and an instinctive knowledge of the surroundings and natural elements. Our photos were better than we could have imagined. Highly recommend Jon for any of your photo needs!”
