Recently, I shot a custom Sports Media Day for the Alabama Rays early in the morning near The Hangout. Roll-in morning rain cleared out just in time, leaving us with crisp water reflections along the public boardwalk. Combined with the lingering overcast clouds, nature provided a dramatic, moody backdrop that made the entire shoot feel like a high-budget commercial campaign.

Shooting coastal athletic portraits requires a technical approach to prevent athletes from looking washed out or flat against bright sky conditions. For this session, relying solely on natural ambient light wasn't going to slice it.
By deploying Off-Camera Flash (OCF) with targeted modifiers, we achieved a dynamic, editorial look:
Dimensionality & Pop: Off-camera lighting carves out muscle definition, uniform textures, and helmet details, separating the athletes crisp against the stormy skies.
Reflective Environments: The post-rain wet boardwalk created natural leading lines and ground reflections, amplifying the light output for a polished, magazine-cover finish.
Controlled Highlights: Flash allows us to keep the rich blue and grey tones in the morning cloud cover without under-exposing the players’ faces or blowing out background detail.
